What is Neurological Testing?

Neurological testing involves specialized diagnostic procedures to assess the function of the brain, spinal cord, and nervous system. These tests help identify conditions such as epilepsy, neuropathy, multiple sclerosis, and other neurological disorders. At Rochester Neurological Center, we offer a wide variety of tests to address your unique needs.

Conditions Diagnosed With Neurological Testing

We do all testing on-site. Our neurodiagnostic services include:

EMG Test- Electromyography

EMG is a test that is performed to diagnose neuromuscular disorders. An EMG records the electrical signals that travel from the spinal cord to the muscles in the arms and legs. It may be performed for people experiencing certain symptoms, such as:

  • Tingling
  • Numbness
  • Muscle Weakness
  • Muscle Pain or Cramping

Autonomic Testing

This measures how the systems in the body that are controlled by the autonomic nerves respond to stimulation. The data collected during testing will indicate if the autonomic nervous system is functioning as it should or if nerve damage has occurred.

EEG Test- Electroencephalography

EEGs monitor brain activity through the skull. EEG is used to help diagnose certain seizure disorders and brain tumors. Also used to evaluate sleep disorders and monitor brain activity when a patient has been fully anesthetized or loses consciousness.

TCD Test- Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound

TCD is a non-invasive ultrasound method used to examine the blood circulation within the brain. TCD ultrasound images help in the diagnosis of a wide range of conditions affecting the blood flow to the brain and within the brain.

SEP Test- Somatosensory Evoked Potential

A SEP test studies the relay of body sensations to your brain and how the brain receives those sensations. Stimulating electrodes are placed on your arm or leg, and it generates an electrical signal. The test evaluates the health of your peripheral nervous and your spinal cord.

VEP Test- Visual Evoked Potential

VEP measures the electrical activity in the vision system. When light from an image enters your eye, it is converted into electrical energy at the retina and travels through the optic nerve to the visual cortex of the brain, which processes vision.

BSEP Test

Brainstem auditory evoked response: BSEP can help diagnose the vestibular system, peripheral vs. central.

NBT Test- Neurobehavioral

NBT is a non-invasive method used to evaluate the performance of the central nervous system in an individual. This test consists of tasks that measure the performance of particular neurologic functions, such as the ability to learn, reaction time, memory, and coordination. This test generally takes 60 to 90 minutes.

Sleep Center

Home sleep monitors are available by appointment. The difference is that for a sleep study, you'll have a bunch of sensors attached to your body, and someone will monitor you.

WaterMark- Home Sleep Test

One of our home sleep tests. The WaterMark records airflow, heart rate, pulse, and sleep pattern.
